A bit of history :
The Abbé de l'Épée (1712-1789) created the first school for deaf children - which later became the National Institute for Young Deaf People in Paris. Having taken in two deaf twin sisters in his home, he learned their signs and began to teach them using the methodical sign method. He extended this teaching to an increasing number of deaf children. Following his example, many schools were created throughout France, in various European countries and in the United States. This is why the memory of the Abbé de l'Épée is still alive among the deaf, and why they dedicate a festival to him every year.
During a trip to Paris, Monseigneur Champion de Cicé, archbishop of Bordeaux, visited the school for the deaf founded by the Abbé de l'Épée. He was won over and decided to create a similar establishment in Bordeaux. He asked Abbé Sicard to teach there. Sicard trained with the Abbé de l'Épée. A house is rented 39 rue Capdeville, a few deaf students are gathered and classes begin on February 20, 1786.
